Higher Order Resilience: Finding the Right Dose of Stress

More tracking, more optimization, and more hard work don't automatically make you harder to break. Resilience depends on whether you can recover from disruption, adapt, and face the next challenge without getting buried by it.
Carl Hardwick and James FitzGerald frame the issue around stress, fragility, and the difference between a useful challenge and one that leaves you worse off.
Resilience Means Recovering and Adapting
A common training model starts with overload. Something disturbs homeostasis, creates acute fatigue, and recovery can lead to better performance. Hardwick and FitzGerald use that same model to describe resilience in a much broader way.
Resilience is the ability to recover, adapt, and face the next stressor. That applies to physical capacity, but also to cognitive, emotional, behavioral, immune, and digestive capacity.
Performance does not only mean lifting more weight or running faster. It can mean handling a difficult conversation, changing a routine, recovering after a hard week, or waking up able to do the same demanding thing again.
Resilience also develops over repeated bouts. One response to one event gives some information. However, a person's capacity becomes clearer through repeated disruption, recovery, and adjustment.
Fragility Is the Other End of the Scale
FitzGerald describes fragility as the opposite of resilience. A fragile person or system can't take much disruption before it falls apart or needs a long time to recover.
He compares it to a car hitting a bump in the road. A strong suspension absorbs the bump and keeps moving. A fragile suspension may react as if the whole vehicle is coming apart.
That fragility can show up in the body, mind, emotions, or behavior. Someone may handle a demanding physical situation well but struggle with a small disruption to a preferred morning routine.
Resilience isn't a single permanent score. It changes by context, by the stressor, and by the person's current state.
The Stressor Is Not the Same as the Dose
The speakers describe stress as a disruption, an invader, or a bump that knocks a person out of balance. In coaching, the task is to create enough disruption to produce a response without creating a hole the client can't climb out of.
A coach can prescribe a stressor, but cannot fully prescribe the dose. The stressor might be a hard set, a lifestyle adjustment, a cognitive demand, or a change in routine. The dose is how strongly that particular person experiences it on that day.
You can give someone a stressor and predict the dose. Their response determines whether that prediction was right.
The same training session can feel manageable one month and overwhelming the next. Capacity changes, and the person doing the work has information a written plan cannot hold.
Hard doesn't always produce more capacity. A hard challenge can also break someone down and make them less able to handle the next stressor.
When Training Stress Helps, Stalls, or Breaks You Down
The discussion separates three possible outcomes of hard training.

Functional overreaching is intentional. The person expects not to feel their best for a while, then expects recovery and supercompensation.
Nonfunctional overreaching is different because the performance decline stays in place. Overtraining syndrome goes further still. FitzGerald describes people feeling profoundly unwell for extended periods, with no energy, drive, or vigor. He also notes that it has been difficult to measure directly and is often diagnosed by exclusion, a point also discussed in this practical guide to overtraining syndrome.
Chosen Challenges and Real-World Disruption
FitzGerald draws a distinction between stress people impose on themselves and stress they have to react to. He sees jiu-jitsu, rock climbing, and cross-country running as useful because conditions cannot be completely controlled.
In those activities, a person has to respond in real time. The terrain changes, an opponent reacts, or fatigue shows up in a way that can't be perfectly programmed beforehand.
The point isn't that every challenge needs to be extreme. Rather, real resilience shows itself when conditions don't go as planned and the person must adjust.
Willingness matters, too. Someone may handle high-intensity situations well yet resist a minor change to their routine because they want control. That reaction is still a stress response. Awareness of the reaction can lower its intensity and make flexibility easier over time.
Optimization Can Create a False Sense of Preparedness
The speakers question whether wearables, readiness scores, controlled stress exposure, and constant optimization can create the appearance of resilience without building it.
A person can track everything and believe they are prepared for anything. Yet an unexpected physical, emotional, or cognitive disruption may reveal that their capacity is narrow. FitzGerald connects this concern to Nassim Taleb's idea of anti-fragility, where appropriately scaled challenge can make a system stronger.
Hardwick and FitzGerald's criticism is aimed at a version of fitness that treats metrics, prescribed systems, and controlled inputs as proof of capability. FitzGerald calls himself "post-fitness" and argues that the modern fitness universe has to die if it keeps people separated from real activity, real food, and real consequences.
That argument also shapes the individual-design approach taught through OPEX coaching education.
Are People Less Resilient Than They Were?
Hardwick raises the idea that difficult situations used to be imposed by daily life. Today, many people have to deliberately choose challenge and structure it into their lives.
The speakers point to worsening metabolic health and lower aerobic capacity in young people. Hardwick recalls watching children at a field day and realizing many of them did not know how to move well aerobically.
They also separate longevity from capacity. Medicine allows people to survive chronic conditions for far longer, but living longer does not prove that a person can function independently, handle cognitive strain, or tolerate disruption.
The NBA discussion makes a similar point. Hardwick found that injury rates had stayed roughly flat since the mid-2000s, while load management had risen by about 120% to 125% since the early 2010s. The episode does not treat that as proof that players are more fragile, but it questions whether greater protection has produced better durability.
Higher Order Resilience Builds Autonomy
Higher order resilience is a spectrum, not a badge. Lower-order resilience isn't bad. It describes where a person is right now and how much outside structure they need to handle a challenge.
At the higher end, a person can choose cognitive and physical challenges, respond to what happens, adjust the difficulty, recover, and repeat the process. They understand the difference between a useful bump and a stressor that will crush them.
A coach can start with a small physical prescription. For example, on the third set of a single-leg exercise, the client may safely push beyond the number of reps they believe they can do. The goal is to see what happens when they meet a manageable edge.
In consultation, the coach may present several lifestyle changes. If one creates an immediate pause or discomfort, that response provides useful information. The coach can then work with the client on a challenge that is uncomfortable without being overwhelming.
Over time, the client should become better at recognizing the right dose independently. They may do one more rep, one fewer rep, hold a position longer, or adjust timing based on how they feel that day. A coach should see that kind of thoughtful adjustment as an important moment of learning, not as failure to follow a plan.
Build Less Fragility a Little at a Time
The central point is simple: hard work alone doesn't create resilience. The right amount of stress, followed by recovery and reflection, gives a person a chance to become more capable.
Higher order resilience means learning your homeostasis, noticing what disrupts it, and making better adjustments over time. The goal is to become less fragile, a little bit at a time.
